Babies lost to abortion: Unplanned but not unknown

Unplanned

June is the founder of the Buttons Project Singapore, an initiative that invites anyone affected by abortion to send in, either physically or digitally, a button of memorial for each baby. The Buttons Project Singapore also runs support groups for men and women affected by abortion in our nation.

For three weeks, the Lord started prompting me to read Psalm 147:4 every day. Just before this, I had received a vision of a night sky with many stars as I was seeking the Lord on what to do with regards to abortion in Singapore.

I wondered what the night sky and the stars had to do with abortion. I had no clue.

“He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.” (Psalm 147:4)

The revelation came as I was watching a sneak preview of the movie Unplanned, which will be released locally next week in October. Unplanned tells a deeply personal and inspiring story of Abby Johnson, the youngest director of Planned Parenthood, which runs abortion clinics across the USA as part of its work.

As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors, Johnson was involved in more than 22,000 abortions and counselled countless women. This was until the day she saw something on the job, which led her to quit and ultimately become one of the most ardent champions of life in America.

Having been through an abortion, I knew this movie would not be easy to watch. Yet, I was curious to find out what it was that she saw at the abortion facility that changed everything and resulted in this story.

I had an abortion, and the guilt and shame almost killed me

By the end of the show, I was completely undone. I started crying out to God. “Oh Lord, all these babies… They are unnamed. They are faceless. People don’t even know that they exist. And they are just being thrown away.”

That was when the Lord dropped Psalm 147:4 into my heart again. Like my vision of stars in the night sky, He counts the number of babies lost to abortion and calls them all by name.

There have been more than 45 million abortions in North America from 1970 to 2015. And in Singapore, more than half a million babies have been aborted in Singapore since the 1970s.

How could God possibly have counted them all and still called them each by name? And that’s when it hit me that this is the heart of our Father. Even if they are nameless and faceless to the world, He knows each of these aborted babies so intimately.

So often we have missed Father’s heart towards the unborn simply because they are voiceless. Who would speak up for them?

Together with five organisations that also carry a piece of the Father’s heart towards the unborn and those affected by abortion, The Buttons Project Singapore, which I started in 2017, will be holding a movie fundraiser in October, starting on Thursday, October 3, 2019.

Each of these organisations is involved in walking alongside mothers with unsupported pregnancies, adoption services, post-abortion healing and inspiring the Church to rise up and choose life.

There will be a painted canvas of a night sky at the movie screenings. People who would like to remember a baby lost to abortion can choose a button from us, each representing a baby we have not met, and stick it on the canvas in remembrance.

With every one of us playing our part, we believe a culture of life can be built in Singapore.
