Songs for Wuhan

In times of trouble, why not band together?

In the fight against the novel coronavirus, talented artistes and ordinary citizens all over the world have been paying tribute to not only those on the frontline, but also the afflicted and anxious.

We’ve put together a list of these songs of support – may they inspire and encourage us all!

#1《武汉,你好吗?》– Wang Ping Jiu, Chang Shi Lei

With a title that literally means “Wuhan, How Are You Doing?”, the lyrics read like a love letter from a worried family member to a loved one.

Performed by four Chinese artistes, Chang Shi Lei, Dou Dou, Li Xian and Zhu Yi Long, a whopping total of 51 Chinese artistes appear in the music video (MV) to cheer Wuhan on, including Alan Tam, Donnie Yen, Jay Chou and Jackie Chan.

The MV also features stirring clips of family members saying goodbye to their loved ones who have made the decision to stay in or enter the affected areas to fight the novel coronavirus

#2《平凡天使》– G.E.M. Deng Zi Qi

“Ordinary Angels” is a song that celebrates the efforts of everyday heroes, like that anonymous Chinese resident rushing to deliver 500 masks to a neighbourhood police station before running away quickly, disregarding the need for attention or recognition.

The MV also garnered over 1.2 million views in a matter of days, surpassing even JJ Lin and Stefanie Sun’s song.

We should all be like that guy – may this MV inspire us to rise up as ordinary angels to the people around us in need.

#3《我的城市生病了》– Duan Si Si,Tan Xuan, Chen Yan

This is a really special one. Listening to “My City Is Sick” helped me understand what Wuhan truly is. It’s more than the city where a virus came from – Wuhan is home to millions.

Written from the perspective of the local people, the song mentions places and things unique to the city like its famous Yellow Crane Tower. It’s how Duan Si Si, Tan Xuan and Chen Yan pay tribute to their Wuhan roots and the city that raised them.

The song was also sung by 17 individuals from Wuhan, all of whom are writers, artistes, actors, singers, musicians and teachers in the city.

#4 Stay With You – JJ Lin, Stefanie Sun

JJ Lin’s latest song is a ballad of hope that will lift you up if you’re feeling lonely. Lin arranged and sang the piece, while fellow Singaporean artiste Stefanie Sun penned the lyrics.

The touching single pays tribute to frontline medical teams and comforts listeners with its catchy refrain, “I’ll stay with you”. Here we’d like to give a special shoutout to the medical workers who are daily answering the call of duty – thank you!

JJ Lin and Stefanie Sun’s new song “Stay With You”: An anthem of hope for those battling coronavirus

As a Christian, Lin has also not shied away from using his influence to spread love and encouragement.

The MV features a shot of a rainbow – a biblical reminder of God’s covenant with man – over his concert in the Hubei leg of his Sanctuary 2.0 World Tour, along with photos of him praying with his crew. Perhaps the message in this montage is that we can find hope in a God who keeps His promises as well as peace in prayer.

The video ends with the message: “There is no city in complete isolation, only a love that never leaves”.

#5 Braver, Together约好一起勇敢

This is the newest song on the list and it’s got National Day feels: Released yesterday by The Songwriter Music College, Funkie Monkies Publishing and Our SG, the MV is a showcase of the Singapore Spirit.

Featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the packing and distribution of masks to Singaporean households, this song speaks of the courage that a united community can bring.

Produced in two languages, you can listen to the Mandarin version here. Its vocals are supported by a local choir that features children too!

#6《我们一定会胜利》– Huang Xiao Ming, Cai Wen Jing, Zhang Bo and other artistes

The song title alone makes for a clear message of hope: “We will definitely be victorious!” Notably, the song was written, recorded and produced in a mere 24 hours after the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Moved by the need to quickly restore public confidence, many Chinese artistes pitched in to make the song a reality!

#7《不要惧怕》– Cheryl Lai, Serene Chng

Another product of homegrown talent, this is a short but sweet one by two Singaporean friends written to encourage its listeners not to fear.

The song echoes that famous verse in Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

It’s heartfelt, from our heartlands to Hubei. You can also read Cheryl and Serene’s story behind the song here.

#8《坚信爱会赢》– Liang Mang, Shu Nan

Loosely translated as “Firmly Believing That Love Will Win”, this song is another tribute to the selflessness of individuals in the worst-affected areas of Hubei.

Like《武汉,你好吗?》, it packs a ton of cameos in its MV with the likes of Wang Lee Hom, Jackie Chan, Li Guang Jie, Xiao Zhan, Wu Jing and Yang Pei-An making appearances.

As I listen to the lyrics about a love that never dies, I can’t help but be reminded of God’s love and victory over death. What a hope we have in Jesus!

If there’s one thing all these songs share in common, it’s the hope within them. There is hope for Wuhan, for China, for all of us. Believe in that and stay positive – we’ll get through this together!
